Maho Bay

Posted by darlingdarleenadmin on

Many people have questioned whether we liked where we stayed at St. John, since it was semi camping. I like to call it luxury camping because we weren’t actually staying in a tent and sleeping bag. Well, I guess it was a tent–they call it tent-cottage. Besides the nasty bugs, we did like it very much. The place is called Maho Bay Camps, located right in Maho Bay. Our tent cottage was right off the beach. It did have beds, electricity, wood floors, camping stove, cooler. It was all screened in, but we were often visited by lizards and other insects. No phone or TV. There was a communal bathroom–very clean actually. The cool thing about the campground is that it is a non-profit, green resort. The whole place was constructed to avoid soil erosion. Water conservation and recycling is practice. Water is heated by solar panels. I like the sense of community. Lots of fun activities. I did yoga every morning with a beautiful overlook (that’s Suki the instructor in the bad-light picture). I also took a glassblowing class (I’ll post later). Lots of fun trails within walking distance from the campground (all blue picture). The restaurant had yummy food and another fabulous overlook (beautiful sunset picture). There was a cool art gallery–beautiful artwork from recycled trash. Anyway, it was a good way to really get to know the island. And not to mention on a budget!
